In anticipation of the third season debut of Outlander, EW will release its third cover devoted to the Starz drama in September. Besides offering an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at production that took place in South Africa earlier this year, we’ll release a new set of portraits that are sure to make your pulses race.
That’s not all EW has planned in preparation for the third season based on Voyager, the third book in author Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander series. Richard Rankin, who plays Roger Wakefield in the series, will follow in Sam Heughan’s footsteps by participating in the magazine’s annual Brave New Warriors panel July 21 at Comic-Con International in San Diego. And come September, Amy Wilkinson and yours truly will resume our weekly Outlander Live! show on EW Radio, SiriusXM 105.
The new season picks up right after Claire (Caitriona Balfe) travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948, where she gives birth to Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) daughter Brianna and resumes her marriage to her first husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies). Back in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire.
EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate is negotiating with Outlander star Sam Heughan for the male lead opposite Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis in The Spy Who Dumped Me, an Imagine Entertainment comedy that Susanna Fogel will direct from the script she wrote with David Iserson. Brian Grazer is producing. The pic shoots this summer for release on July 6, 2018.
McKinnon and Kunis will play best friends who unwittingly become entangled in an international conspiracy when one of the women discovers the boyfriend who dumped her actually was a spy. That’s where Heughan comes in. The Scottish actor has established himself in the role of Jamie Fraser in the Starz series Outlander, and this becomes his first big starring role in a Hollywood feature.
The film is being overseen by Lionsgate’s Peter Kang and Geoff Shaevitz and Imagine’s Erica Huggins and Julie Oh, the latter of whom brought in the project. Heughan is repped by Ruth Young at United Agents, UTA, and attorney Steve Warren.
Sam will be featured in an upcoming issue of Mens Health – South Africa and I have added behind the scenes photos from his photo session as well as a sneak peek photo and video. Enjoy!

The Outlander hunk is going head to head with The 100’s Bob Morley in the final round, but he’s more than confident he’ll walk away victorious once again.
Fawned over by fans across the world, Sam Heughan is well known for his chiselled good looks.
The Outlander hunk has won his fair share of ‘Sexiest Male’ contests, and is now set to take home the crown for E!’s Alpha Male for the third year in a row.
His competition this time around? Australian star Bob Morley from TV show The 100.
Sam is once again in the final round, and is counting on his loyal fans to help him beat Morley to the top spot in what will be a hat trick of hunkiness.
But as he’s shown on Twitter , the 36-year-old is already confident he and his Heughligans have the title in the bag.
Taking to social media, he shared a link to the online voting system, saying: “Sorry Bob. We got this!”
In January, the Barbour team headed to the beautiful and picturesque setting of Crailing Hall, in Crailing on the Scottish Borders, to shoot our SS17 Shirt Department campaign. The day was spilt between two shoots, one of ourselves, and the other for our media partner, leading men’s lifestyle magazine, GQ.
We arrived early onto the set to ensure everything was ready for Sam’s arrival to the first location. It was straight to hair and makeup before we grabbed some breakfast, as we all prepped for the day’s shooting. The morning was spent with the GQ team in the nearby Kelsos, then soon after this, Sam was transferred to our location, ready for his latest Barbour shoot!
Our SS17 Shirt Department film focused on Sam’s best friend, his chocolate Labrador, who was following him around the house as he got ready (lead in mouth) hoping he would be taken for a walk… Sam finally gave in and they went for a walk by the river on the grounds of the hall. We shot in 4 different locations around the grounds; 3 around the interior of the house, and outside by the trickling river – which made for the perfect outdoor setting.
Due to the time of the year, we finished rather quickly, as we was losing light. Sam was tremendous throughout the day, ensuring we got all the stills and video footage that was needed. No shoot would be complete without a dog, and we were very lucky to have Tia on set – a beautiful chocolate Labrador who adored Sam, and can be seen in nearly all of our SS17 Shirt Department images. You can read Tia’s #BarbourDogs account of the shoot here.
In case you missed our last Shirt Department blog, we caught up with our Menswear Designer, Andy McMillan to take a closer look at the checks in this season’s SS17 Shirt Department Collection.

I’ve added screencaps of the new Outlander season 3 trailer which largely featured Sam and Caitriona. September seems so far away! Ugh. Enjoy.
As any Outlander fan will tell you, the love story of Claire and Jamie Fraser has always been a bit star-crossed. That’s what happens when you mix romance and time travel. But Season 3 promises the rockiest road yet for the Frasers as the couple are ripped apart for what looks like a long time.
Calling in from the set in Scotland late last year, Jamie actor Sam Heughan told Vanity Fair that being apart from Balfe for part (we won’t say how long) of Season 3 was like “having a death in the family. Well, I don’t know. I mean, it’s just like a different show. It’s hard to separate yourself from the character. It’s always hard when we’re apart, actually, because she’s a great person, great to come to work with, and a very good actress. But I think it all adds to the reunion—if there’s a reunion, or when there’s a reunion—well, you know there’s one in the books. It should be very special.” Caitriona Balfe jokingly responded, “Och! He’s already killed me in his mind. Gone. Too sad.”
According to the official Starz description:
In Season Three of Outlander, the story picks up right after Claire travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948. Now pregnant, she struggles with the fallout of her sudden reappearance and its effect on her marriage to her first husband, Frank. Meanwhile, in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire. As the years pass, Jamie and Claire attempt to make a life apart from one another, each haunted by the memory of their lost love. The budding possibility that Claire can return to Jamie in the past breathes new hope into Claire’s heart… as well as new doubt. Separated by continents and centuries, Claire and Jamie must find their way back to each other. As always, adversity, mystery, and adventure await them on the path to reunion. And the question remains: when they find each other, will they be the same people who parted at the standing stones, all those years ago?
If Claire has to be separated from her beloved Jamie, at least she can console herself with the fabulous fahsion of the 1960s. (Listen! I’m just trying to find a silver lining here.) “Probably, to the disappointment of all the costume fans, I did not miss that corset or bum roll for one second,” Balfe says of her more modern Season 3 wardrobe. “Being able to do 40s, 50s, and 60s—especially the 60s—it was just such fun. [Costume designer] Terry [Dresbach] had in racks and racks of clothing. She made some pieces in-house and other pieces are vintage finds that she had. I love what each era tells you about the women of the time—it’s just such an interesting barometer. Some of the 60s pieces are so cool and beautiful that I asked her to make me doubles of some things.”
The third season of Outlander—which will include 13 episodes based upon Voyager, the third of eight books in Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling series—will premiere in September. Fans eager to get an early taste can also catch the Outlander panel at San Diego Comic Con this summer.
