Press/Video: Finally, We Have a Premiere Date for Outlander Season 3

Get the inside info about the new episodes. Plus, an exclusive video of a very anguished Jamie and Claire.

Finally, the Outlander news you’ve been waiting for: We’re thrilled to announce that Season 3 of the STARZ time-travel romance will return Sunday, September 10. Yes, that’s right—you can now mark the end of Droughtlander in your calendar.

Thirteen new episodes devoted to Claire and Jamie will air this fall, and they’ll be based on Voyager, the third of Diana Gabaldon’s eight Outlander books.

Here’s the official season three poster, showing Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) on opposite sides of the standing stone—and in totally different centuries. Claire’s in the 1960s, having returned to her original life, and husband Frank (Tobias Menzies), while Jamie’s in the 1700s. No, you’re crying.

And here’s an exclusive live-action version of the poster, featuring a very anguished Claire and Jamie:

“You can come back to your life,” Claire muses in voiceover, “but it’s never the same. Maybe it’s enough to have gone once. How many people can say they had that?”

As for what we can expect, the new season will pick up right after Claire returns to her old life, pregnant with Jamie’s child. As for Jamie, we’ll see him at the historic battle of Culloden, fighting not only Black Jack Randall but his grief at losing Claire. The battle itself will be epic, showrunner Ronald D. Moore told ELLE.com: “I’m very excited about finally delivering Culloden to the audience after having talked about this pivotal event for so long.”

Moore also says the two are building their lives again independently: “We’re going to reset the story and the characters at the start of the season, giving the audience a window into what happened to Jamie at the battle of Culloden, as well as what happened to Claire in the twentieth century.”

What should fans be most excited about, according to Moore? “Getting to see the ways in which Jamie and Claire grew and changed over the course of their 20-year separation is a very exciting prospect.” And with Scotland, Cape Town, and even an ocean voyage to the New World (which Moore calls “a big turning point in the saga”) on the horizon, the very setting of this epic romance will change.

Of course, a reunion is definitely on the cards for our favorite time-defying lovers, though it might take a while. The only question is whether they’ll still feel the same way after so long apart. But true love never dies, right?

Press: Outlander: EW will release the drama’s next cover in September

In anticipation of the third season debut of Outlander, EW will release its third cover devoted to the Starz drama in September. Besides offering an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at production that took place in South Africa earlier this year, we’ll release a new set of portraits that are sure to make your pulses race.

That’s not all EW has planned in preparation for the third season based on Voyager, the third book in author Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander series. Richard Rankin, who plays Roger Wakefield in the series, will follow in Sam Heughan’s footsteps by participating in the magazine’s annual Brave New Warriors panel July 21 at Comic-Con International in San Diego. And come September, Amy Wilkinson and yours truly will resume our weekly Outlander Live! show on EW Radio, SiriusXM 105.

The new season picks up right after Claire (Caitriona Balfe) travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948, where she gives birth to Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) daughter Brianna and resumes her marriage to her first husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies). Back in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire.

Press/Video: First Outlander Season 3 Trailer Reveals Claire and Jamie’s Painful Separation

As any Outlander fan will tell you, the love story of Claire and Jamie Fraser has always been a bit star-crossed. That’s what happens when you mix romance and time travel. But Season 3 promises the rockiest road yet for the Frasers as the couple are ripped apart for what looks like a long time.

Calling in from the set in Scotland late last year, Jamie actor Sam Heughan told Vanity Fair that being apart from Balfe for part (we won’t say how long) of Season 3 was like “having a death in the family. Well, I don’t know. I mean, it’s just like a different show. It’s hard to separate yourself from the character. It’s always hard when we’re apart, actually, because she’s a great person, great to come to work with, and a very good actress. But I think it all adds to the reunion—if there’s a reunion, or when there’s a reunion—well, you know there’s one in the books. It should be very special.” Caitriona Balfe jokingly responded, “Och! He’s already killed me in his mind. Gone. Too sad.”

According to the official Starz description:

In Season Three of Outlander, the story picks up right after Claire travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948. Now pregnant, she struggles with the fallout of her sudden reappearance and its effect on her marriage to her first husband, Frank. Meanwhile, in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire. As the years pass, Jamie and Claire attempt to make a life apart from one another, each haunted by the memory of their lost love. The budding possibility that Claire can return to Jamie in the past breathes new hope into Claire’s heart… as well as new doubt. Separated by continents and centuries, Claire and Jamie must find their way back to each other. As always, adversity, mystery, and adventure await them on the path to reunion. And the question remains: when they find each other, will they be the same people who parted at the standing stones, all those years ago?

If Claire has to be separated from her beloved Jamie, at least she can console herself with the fabulous fahsion of the 1960s. (Listen! I’m just trying to find a silver lining here.) “Probably, to the disappointment of all the costume fans, I did not miss that corset or bum roll for one second,” Balfe says of her more modern Season 3 wardrobe. “Being able to do 40s, 50s, and 60s—especially the 60s—it was just such fun. [Costume designer] Terry [Dresbach] had in racks and racks of clothing. She made some pieces in-house and other pieces are vintage finds that she had. I love what each era tells you about the women of the time—it’s just such an interesting barometer. Some of the 60s pieces are so cool and beautiful that I asked her to make me doubles of some things.”

The third season of Outlander—which will include 13 episodes based upon Voyager, the third of eight books in Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling series—will premiere in September. Fans eager to get an early taste can also catch the Outlander panel at San Diego Comic Con this summer.

Video/Press: Outlander star Sam Heughan recalls his acting roots

SAM HEUGHAN has recalled his days studying at Glasgow’s ‘Royal Conservatoire’ performing arts academy, describing it as a “terrific experience”.

The Outlander star, a BA Acting graduate from the Glasgow institution, has been recruited alongside former alumni as part of a drive to attract the nation’s next generation of performing artists.

In a 4 minute interview shared by the Royal Conservatoire via Youtube, the actor recalls his formative years and reveals the invaluable lessons learned and friendships forged while studying for his diploma.

The Royal Conservatoire’s campaign arrives hot on the heels of the announcement that the institution is now regarded as the world’s third best college for performing arts.

Past alumni of the Scottish academy include household names such as James McAvoy, David Tennant, Katie Leung and Alan Cumming.

And Sam Heughan has no doubts that the time he spent at the institution has led him to where he is today. The actor said: “I had a terrific experience at the Royal Conservatoire, being here on the stage is where it all began for me. My training gave me opportunities to work in Scotland, the UK and now in America where I spend a lot of time.

“The Royal Conservatoire knows and understands this industry, the teaching staff have great relationships and partnerships with national theatre companies, directors, agents and casting agents.”

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for the 36-year-old; Sam’s first audition didn’t quite go to plan: “I auditioned for the Royal Conservatoire twice. My first audition was very bad – I had no idea what I was doing but it instilled in me that I had to come back the next year and try again.

“If you don’t get in on your first attempt, it’s a test of character. In this industry you need to learn to take on board productive criticism.

“I needed to work harder and come back better – so when I auditioned the second time, I was determined I was going to get in. The audition process is not as scary as you might think. It was a really rewarding experience and then when I was offered a place, it was sheer elation.

“Thanks to drama school I made a core group of friends so that no matter where I am in the world, there is always a contingent of Scottish actors and familiar faces.”

Principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Professor Jeffrey Sharkey, said: “Scotland’s national conservatoire is one of the world’s top 10 performing arts institutions, ranked alongside great international establishments such as New York’s Juilliard and the Vienna Conservatoire.

“Students come from across the globe to access the high quality education on offer right here in Glasgow.

“We offer students a distinctive learning experience along with a strong belief in the transformative power of the performing arts, which allows us to be one of the most inclusive, diverse and collaborative institutions within Scotland as well as internationally.

“We welcome students from across Scotland, the UK, Europe and beyond to begin their learning journeys with us in September 2018.”
